Civil Defence to Conduct City-Wide Blackout Drill on May 15

Sri Vijaya Puram: In a bid to strengthen its emergency preparedness framework, Civil Defence authorities in Sri Vijaya Puram will conduct a city-wide blackout drill on May 15, 2025, at 6:00 PM. The routine exercise is designed to assess the functional readiness of authorized sirens and reinforce public awareness of emergency blackout procedures.

The mock drill is part of a broader effort to bolster civil response capabilities in the event of an actual emergency. Sirens will be activated precisely at 6:00 PM and will sound continuously for five minutes until 6:05 PM. During this window, all residents are requested to participate by switching off all light-emitting electrical appliances, including inverters, for a duration of 10 minutes.

At 6:10 PM, a second siren lasting one minute will signal the end of the drill, after which residents may resume their normal activities. The exercise is expected to familiarize both emergency personnel and the general public with the standard response protocols that are to be followed during an actual emergency situation.

Civil Defence authorities emphasized the dual objectives of the drill: to test operational readiness of infrastructure and to inculcate a culture of preparedness among citizens. As such, public participation is not just encouraged but considered essential for the success of the operation.

The backdrop for such an initiative includes a growing emphasis on urban safety and civil defence readiness, especially in remote and vulnerable regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Given the strategic significance of Sri Vijaya Puram and its exposure to natural disasters such as tsunamis and cyclones, readiness drills have become a routine yet vital aspect of local governance.

The upcoming drill also serves to evaluate the technical efficacy of existing siren systems, many of which were installed over a decade ago. Officials note that such periodic checks are necessary to ensure that alert systems are both functional and audible across all designated zones.

Residents are advised to cooperate fully and adhere strictly to the blackout instructions during the drill. Authorities also urge the public not to panic or confuse the exercise with an actual emergency. Information posters and public announcements have already been circulated across various media platforms to ensure that all sectors of society are informed in advance.

In line with this, educational institutions, market associations, and residential colonies have been briefed by local administrative officers to promote smooth implementation of the drill. Volunteers from Civil Defence units and trained personnel will also be on standby to assist with monitoring and post-drill evaluation.

By incorporating public participation in such simulations, the administration aims to minimize confusion and maximize coordinated action during real crises. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to embed disaster preparedness into the community fabric of Sri Vijaya Puram.

Officials reiterated that the drill will not disrupt public utilities or transportation services. However, the brief blackout exercise should be treated with the seriousness it warrants, as even a moment’s delay in actual emergencies can have far-reaching consequences.

Through such initiatives, Sri Vijaya Puram continues to build on its legacy of civic vigilance and preparedness, ensuring that when disaster strikes, both systems and citizens are ready to respond.
