DC South Andaman Reviews Key Projects in Sri Vijaya Puram

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 22: The Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, Arjun Sharma, conducted a comprehensive site inspection across several wards falling under the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, with an eye on pending civic issues and forward-looking developmental projects. Accompanied by the SVPMC Chairperson, councilors from multiple wards, officials from the Revenue Department, and engineers from the Andaman Public Works Department, the team visited various critical locations that are integral to the municipal agenda.

At Haddo, where Wards 1 and 2 are located, the delegation reviewed proposed construction sites for new Smart Markets. These markets are designed to provide designated spaces for vendors dealing in fish, fruits, vegetables, and grocery items. In addition, the plan includes an Ice Plant Unit, aimed at supporting the region’s cold storage and supply chain needs. The proposal is part of a larger initiative to modernize traditional market infrastructure and streamline access for both vendors and consumers.

A site situated in front of the Haddo Hindi Medium School was also inspected. This area has been earmarked for the proposed development of a Senior Citizen Park, aimed at providing recreational space for the elderly community. The Deputy Commissioner directed officials from the Revenue Department to initiate the formal process for earmarking the land to expedite the project.

In Ward 16, the inspection focused on areas frequently affected by waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon season. This has been a persistent problem impacting daily life and mobility. The Deputy Commissioner instructed the Executive Engineer of the South Andaman Division, APWD, to prepare a detailed project estimate for widening the existing nallah. Additionally, Revenue officials were directed to carry out land demarcation and ensure that necessary portions of land are surrendered by private tenants, where applicable, to facilitate the implementation.

At Attam Pahad in Ward 18, the site visit addressed longstanding issues related to inadequate road connectivity. The Deputy Commissioner asked for an estimate to be prepared for the construction of a new access road to improve connectivity for local residents. He also emphasized the need for strict enforcement against unauthorized encroachments on public land. Relevant officials were instructed to initiate the legal and administrative procedures required for removing such encroachments.

In Ward 12, the focus shifted to a proposal for constructing a new shopping complex under the aegis of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council. The Deputy Commissioner reviewed the location proposed for this commercial facility and instructed Revenue authorities to begin the process of identifying and allocating suitable land.

The visit marks a proactive administrative move to address urban infrastructure gaps, emphasizing multi-sectoral collaboration and rapid execution of long-stalled or proposed projects. The site inspections aimed to provide real-time assessments, gather inputs from ground-level functionaries, and align local developmental efforts with broader urban planning goals.
