ICAR–CIARI Conducts Training on Scientific Crop Protection and Nutrient Management

The ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) successfully conducted a week-long training programme on “Scientific Approaches to Crop Protection and Nutrient Management in Natural Farming, Organic Farming and Integrated Farming Systems” from December 11 to 17, 2025. The initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of technical staff and participants in sustainable, chemical-free farming techniques suited to the agro-ecological conditions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The training focused on natural, organic, and integrated farming systems, covering scientific pest and disease management, nutrient optimization, and on-farm resource recycling. Participants received hands-on instruction in the preparation and application of Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, Ghan Jeevamrit, vermicompost, botanical extracts, and microbial bioagents such as Trichoderma and Pseudomonas, emphasizing eco-friendly crop protection practices.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Jai Sunder, Director of ICAR–CIARI, who highlighted the need for sustainable and climate-resilient farming methods in island agriculture. Dr. R. Kiruba Sankar, Nodal Officer (HRD), stressed the importance of capacity building and skill development in strengthening ICAR human resources.

Coordinated by Dr. I. Jaisankar, Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Dr. Abhilash, and Dr. Prabhu as Course Directors, the training was guided by resource persons from the Division of Natural Resource Management and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sippighat, South Andaman. The course structure included detailed modules on field-level practices, ensuring practical application of scientific principles.

Pre- and post-training evaluations indicated a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, reflecting the programme’s effectiveness. Participants appreciated the hands-on demonstrations, field-oriented approach, and relevance of the content to the challenges faced in island agriculture.

A training manual titled “प्राकृतिक खेती, जैविक खेती एवं एकीकृत कृषि प्रणाली में फसल संरक्षण एवं पोषक तत्व प्रबंधन हेतु आवश्यक आदान” was released during the programme to serve as a reference for participants in future applications. The manual provides step-by-step guidance on sustainable crop protection and nutrient management in chemical-free and integrated farming systems.

The initiative aligns with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration’s goals to promote eco-friendly, low-cost agricultural practices and strengthen technical support for farmers adopting natural and organic farming systems. By enhancing the capacity of technical staff, the programme is expected to facilitate wider adoption of sustainable farming practices across the islands.

Overall, the CIARI training programme demonstrated a commitment to improving agricultural productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability. Participants left with practical knowledge, ready to assist farmers in implementing scientific, climate-resilient methods in their fields.
