Extra E-Bus Services Between Sri Vijaya Puram and Bambooflat Amid Chatham Bridge Restrictions

Date:

According to the revised schedule, four electric bus (E-bus) trips in each direction will be made available. The buses will depart from Bambooflat to Sri Vijaya Puram at 7:15 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m., while return trips will leave Sri Vijaya Puram at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 noon, 5:15 p.m., and 7:15 p.m.

The notification (No. 3258 dated June 17, 2025) restricting traffic on Chatham Bridge cited the unsafe condition of its deck slab and support beams https://thewaveandaman.com/chatham-bridge-traffic-diversion-phoenix-bay/ This has caused significant travel disruptions for commuters relying on Chatham Jetty as a daily transit point between central Sri Vijaya Puram and Bambooflat.

In response, the additional bus services are intended to ease the pressure on ferry routes and provide alternative access for regular passengers, especially those without personal transport.

The new schedule is expected to benefit both office-goers and students who previously depended on vehicular ferries. The department has informed commuters that in case of queries or grievances, they may contact the helpline numbers 03192-230259 and 03192-240059.

The Transport Department has also urged passengers to cooperate during boarding and maintain punctuality to ensure smooth operation of the staggered services. The department is monitoring commuter response and may adjust timings or add services based on demand and feedback.

The rerouting comes amid broader restrictions on vehicular ferry services from Chatham, which now operate only for passengers and two-wheelers. Vehicles, including government transport, are temporarily being diverted through Phoenix Bay Jetty.

By offering additional land-based transit options, the administration aims to minimise inconvenience while long-term solutions to the bridge’s structural issues are assessed. Routine inspections and a structural safety audit are currently underway.

The additional bus services will run until further notice, subject to changes in the condition of Chatham Bridge or introduction of alternate connectivity infrastructure.
