Cellular Jail reopens for tourists after maintenance break

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 23 | The Wave Andaman: After a brief hiatus, the Cellular Jail, one of India’s most poignant symbols of resistance, has reopened its gates to visitors. The 10-day closure, which began on April 13, was part of a scheduled maintenance effort by local authorities to ensure the historic site remains safe, functional, and evocative of its legacy.

Tourists returning to the jail on Tuesday were met with freshly cleaned galleries, upgraded electrical fixtures, and improved pathways. Particular attention was paid to the infrastructure supporting the iconic sound and light show, a centerpiece of the jail’s cultural offerings.

The evening show, now resumed in both Hindi and English, continues to dramatize the stories of freedom fighters who were once imprisoned in these isolated, claustrophobic cells. Narrated against the stark backdrop of the jail’s facades, it is widely regarded as one of the most moving experiences in the archipelago, drawing large crowds, especially during the tourist season.

Despite the closure, the tourism scene in Shri Vijaya Puram (formerly known as Port Blair) remained vibrant. Destinations such as Corbyn’s Cove, Ross Island, and Chidiya Tapu saw steady footfall, with tour operators adjusting itineraries on the fly.

Built in 1906, the Cellular Jail, infamously dubbed Kala Pani, once confined many of India’s most revered freedom fighters, including Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla. Designated a national memorial, the structure is a powerful reminder of the colonial past and the sacrifices made for the country’s independence.

The shutdown had prompted some cancellations and rescheduling, particularly from group tours and heritage enthusiasts. Hoteliers and travel agents alike expressed relief at the reopening. “It’s hard to talk about Andaman tourism without the Cellular Jail,” said Meena Das, who manages a boutique hotel nearby. “It’s more than a monument, it’s a feeling, a chapter of our collective story.”

According to the Department of Art and Culture, the jail is now open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the sound and light show running every evening except Monday. Authorities are encouraging online ticket bookings to manage crowd flow, especially during weekends and holidays.
