Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), April 13: A one-day free multi-specialty medical camp conducted at BJR Hospital in Car Nicobar on April 12 provided specialist healthcare services to 114 islanders, addressing critical access gaps in remote areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Organised in collaboration with the Andaman and Nicobar Command Medical Division and INHS Dhanvantari, the outreach initiative aimed to bring expert medical consultation directly to the local population, where access to specialised healthcare remains limited due to geographical constraints.
The camp brought together a team of specialists offering consultations and treatment across multiple disciplines, including gynaecology, orthopedics, dentistry, ophthalmology, general surgery and general medicine. The initiative focused on delivering comprehensive care under one roof, enabling patients to receive diagnosis and treatment without the need for travel outside the island.
Healthcare and paramedical staff of BJR Hospital played a key role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the camp. Despite the day being a holiday, staff reported for duty in full strength, managing patient flow and supporting visiting specialists throughout the programme. Their coordinated efforts helped handle a significant turnout of residents seeking medical attention.
Officials said the camp witnessed a strong response from the local community, with residents turning up in large numbers to avail themselves of the specialised services. A total of 114 patients benefited from the consultations and treatments provided during the camp.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by medical authorities to strengthen healthcare outreach in remote island regions, ensuring that distance does not prevent access to quality medical services. By bringing multiple specialties to a single location, the camp reduced logistical challenges typically faced by patients in isolated areas.
The Medical Superintendent of BJR Hospital expressed gratitude to the Andaman and Nicobar Command Medical Division and INHS Dhanvantari for their support in organising the camp and contributing to its successful execution.
Authorities emphasised that such collaborative healthcare initiatives are essential in addressing the needs of underserved populations and improving access to specialised treatment in geographically remote regions like Car Nicobar.
