Training on Hygienic Fish Handling Held in Car Nicobar

Car Nicobar, June 18: In a bid to empower local fishing communities, the Department of Fisheries in collaboration with NETFISH-MPEDA, Chennai, conducted a one-day capacity-building programme on hygienic and sanitary procedures in Car Nicobar. The training targeted members of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community and aimed to promote hygienic practices in handling and processing fish.

The session was designed to combine theoretical inputs with hands-on demonstrations. Fishers were taught about good hygienic practices (GHP), maintenance of equipment, and sanitary standard operating procedures (SSOPs). Technical support was provided by Dr. Arulmoorthy, NETFISH-MPEDA’s State Coordinator.

Tools and Equipment Distributed to Support Learning

Participants were given fishing crates, gloves, and water cans to reinforce practical adoption of hygienic habits. The event saw representation from local Tribal Council leaders and was marked by enthusiastic participation from across Car Nicobar villages.

Bridging Language Gaps, Strengthening Livelihoods

Organisers noted that translation support helped break language barriers, ensuring better absorption of the training content. The initiative is part of a broader effort to help fishers gain better market access by aligning with hygiene norms required in competitive fish trade networks. Certificates were distributed at the close of the session to all attendees.
