Illegal Cannabis Plants Found During Police Raid

In a focused anti-narcotics operation, the South Andaman Police uncovered an illegal cannabis plantation at R.B. Nagar in Little Andaman, leading to the arrest of one individual on February 20.

The operation was carried out by personnel from Police Station Hutbay following credible intelligence inputs regarding illicit drug cultivation in the area. Acting on the information, the police team conducted a raid at a residential plot in R.B. Nagar, where cannabis plants were allegedly being grown in violation of narcotics laws.

During the search, officers discovered and seized 21 cannabis plants. The total weight of the seized plants was approximately 28.8 grams, according to official information released by the police. The seizure was carried out without incident, and the plants were taken into custody as evidence as per prescribed legal procedures.

The individual found at the location was taken into custody, and a case has been registered under Section 20(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, which deals with offences related to the cultivation of cannabis plants. Police officials indicated that further investigation is underway to determine whether the cultivation was intended for personal use or linked to a wider network involved in illegal drug activities.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the identity of the accused or possible links to other narcotics-related cases, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Officials said inquiries would focus on tracing the source of the plants, duration of cultivation, and any additional individuals who may have been involved or had prior knowledge of the activity.

Police officials described the operation as part of sustained enforcement efforts to curb drug-related offences in remote and semi-urban areas of the islands. Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering in recent months in response to concerns over the spread of narcotics cultivation and consumption.

The police reiterated their appeal to residents to remain alert and cooperate with authorities by reporting information related to illegal drug cultivation, trafficking or possession. Officials emphasised that timely inputs from the public play a critical role in enabling swift action and maintaining public safety.

The seizure in Little Andaman adds to a series of anti-narcotics actions undertaken across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of a broader campaign to deter illegal drug activities. Police have indicated that similar operations will continue in the coming days to ensure strict enforcement of narcotics laws and to promote a safer, drug-free island society.
