Sri Vijaya Puram, July 1: In a development that adds national heft to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ political voice within the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament and senior BJP leader, has been inducted into the BJP National Council. The announcement was made on Monday during the BJP’s Sangathan Parv in the presence of party workers and senior leaders.
Two other leaders from the Union Territory, Ajay Bairagi and Vishal Jolly, have also been named to the Council, signaling the party’s intent to strengthen the Islands’ role in its central decision-making processes.
The BJP National Council is the party’s highest policy-making body, playing a key role in shaping strategy, legislation, and organizational priorities. Ray’s entry into the forum gives the Islands a direct seat at this influential table at a time when issues such as regional connectivity, infrastructure gaps, and environmental vulnerabilities are gaining national attention.
Ray is widely seen as one of the most prominent political figures in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Over the years, he has been associated with several developmental initiatives, including rural road connectivity, healthcare expansion, and educational access in remote areas. His electoral track record and sustained engagement with grassroots constituencies have made him a significant voice in island politics.
His appointment to the National Council is being viewed within party circles as both recognition of his experience and a strategic move to ensure that the unique challenges of the Islands are factored into national planning. BJP functionaries in Sri Vijaya Puram and the outer islands welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that it would bring greater visibility to local concerns such as sustainable tourism, tribal welfare, disaster preparedness, and improved inter-island transport.
Ray’s re-entry into a national political platform is also expected to revive focus on long-standing demands from the Islands, including proposals for special status and enhanced infrastructure funding. As the BJP continues to consolidate its base in distant territories, the inclusion of experienced representatives like Ray may help bridge regional aspirations with national policy priorities
