Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 26: The Beach Volleyball Tournament for Open Men and Open Women began at Corbyn’s Cove Beach today, bringing 38 teams into competition as part of the World Tourism Day 2026 celebrations organised by the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism (IP&T), A&N Administration.
The tournament is being conducted in collaboration with tourism stakeholders and allied departments, with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs and tourism stakeholders supporting the event’s coordination. The World Tourism Day celebrations are being held this year under the theme ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism’.
Four matches were played on the opening day across the men’s and women’s categories. Competition on the sandy courts featured extended rallies, powerful smashes, defensive digs and closely contested finishes, drawing enthusiastic support from spectators gathered at Corbyn’s Cove Beach.
The opening-day matches also brought together players competing across the two categories, with teamwork and sustained effort shaping the contests. The tournament will move into its league-round phase tomorrow, with matches scheduled to begin at 9 am.
The organisers have invited volleyball enthusiasts and members of the general public to attend the matches and support the participating teams as the competition continues.
The sporting programme forms part of the wider World Tourism Day 2026 celebrations being conducted by IP&T in coordination with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, tourism stakeholders and allied departments.
The celebrations will also feature a Tug of War competition for men and women, scheduled to be held from 3 pm on September 26.
With the volleyball tournament already underway, the sporting events will continue to form part of the World Tourism Day programme, combining competitive activities with the celebrations planned by the administration and participating tourism stakeholders.
The league-round matches tomorrow will commence at 9 am, while the Tug of War competition will take place from 3 pm on September 26. Members of the public and volleyball enthusiasts have been invited to witness the competitions and cheer for the teams taking part.
