In a rare initiative blending adventure and natural wonder, the Directorate of Shipping Services has announced a special cruise to Barren Island, India’s only active volcano, aboard the passenger vessel Sindhu. The exclusive journey, set to sail on October 24, will take passengers through the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea to witness one of the most extraordinary geological marvels in the country.
The cruise, part of the Administration’s broader initiative to promote sustainable tourism in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, offers travellers a unique opportunity to experience the island’s raw volcanic beauty from a safe and comfortable distance. Scheduled as a round-trip voyage from Sri Vijaya Puram, the cruise promises an entire day of scenic exploration, on-sea leisure, and curated experiences designed to blend comfort with discovery.
Passengers will be treated to a guided coastal viewing of Barren Island, where the awe-inspiring sight of the volcano’s majestic cone rises dramatically from the sea. As dawn breaks, travellers will witness a golden sunrise lighting up the volcanic ridge and surrounding waters, an unforgettable spectacle for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The cruise will not involve landing on the island, maintaining environmental safety and adherence to maritime regulations.
The itinerary also features onboard dining with freshly prepared meals, recreational activities, and entertainment. Passengers can enjoy telescopic sea and island viewing, a mini library with selected titles for all age groups, and music sessions curated by local artists and DJs. The combination of relaxation and engagement makes this journey a balanced mix of leisure and learning about one of the world’s rare geological sites.
Officials emphasized that the cruise adheres to strict safety protocols, with trained crew members, lifesaving equipment, and full compliance with environmental and maritime standards. This ensures that the experience remains both enjoyable and secure, aligning with the Directorate’s focus on responsible tourism practices.
Beyond recreation, the voyage also symbolizes the Administration’s ongoing effort to position the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a leading destination for eco-tourism and experiential travel. Barren Island, located about 135 kilometres northeast of Sri Vijaya Puram, is part of the volcanic arc between Sumatra and Myanmar and remains a site of scientific curiosity. It last erupted in 2022, drawing global attention for its rare activity within Indian territory.
By introducing such specialized cruises, the Administration aims to create economic opportunities for local communities, diversify tourism offerings, and showcase the islands’ ecological richness in a controlled and sustainable manner. Officials have described the Barren Island cruise as an initiative that merges adventure with environmental awareness, providing both residents and visitors a front-row experience to nature’s power.
Embarkation for the voyage will begin at Haddo Wharf from 7 p.m. and close strictly at 8:30 p.m. Passengers have been advised to report well in advance to complete boarding formalities, as late arrivals will not be permitted to board the vessel.
For nature enthusiasts, photographers, and explorers, the Barren Island cruise offers a rare chance to witness one of Earth’s most captivating spectacles, an active volcano set against the vast expanse of the Andaman Sea. The initiative underscores the region’s growing reputation as a sustainable and high-value tourism hub, offering experiences that celebrate both the beauty and fragility of nature.
