Nationwide Bank Strike From September 28: Customers Advised to Finish Urgent Transactions

Date:

New Delhi, Sep 26: Banking services at several public sector and old-generation private sector banks could face disruption from September 28 as employee unions prepare for a three-day nationwide strike, prompting customers to complete important transactions before the protest begins.

The proposed strike comes during the banking sector’s half-yearly closing period, increasing the need for customers with urgent branch-related requirements to plan transactions in advance. The government has directed public sector banks to open on Sunday, September 27, allowing customers to complete urgent work before the strike.

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which claims to represent nearly 90 per cent of the country’s banking workforce, has called the strike. The unions are seeking implementation of a five-day banking week, pension-related reforms and other employee welfare measures.

State Bank of India (SBI) has said it will attempt to maintain essential services at its branches and offices during the strike but warned that some operations may be affected. It has advised customers to complete critical transactions beforehand and use digital channels wherever possible, including YONO, internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, ATMs and cash deposit machines.

Bank of India has similarly informed customers about the planned agitation and advised them to use its round-the-clock digital services. These include internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs, business correspondent points and UPI facilities.

Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) are also expected to join the agitation, potentially extending the effect of the strike to banking services in more parts of the country.

Customers may also have access to new-generation private sector banks, including ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank, which are expected to operate normally during the strike period.

The proposed industrial action follows an appeal earlier this week from the Finance Ministry to bank employees’ unions to withdraw the strike and settle outstanding issues through dialogue. The ministry said a majority of the concerns raised by the unions had already been substantially addressed.

With the strike scheduled to begin on September 28, banks have encouraged customers to use the available pre-strike banking window and digital alternatives for transactions that require timely completion.
