Park Near Daryaganj Named After Atal Bihari Vajpayee

A park located along Mahatma Gandhi Marg (Ring Road), parallel to Daryaganj in Delhi’s historic Walled City, has been formally named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sadbhavana Park, marking a tribute to the former Prime Minister. The naming coincided with Vajpayee’s birth anniversary.

The 11-acre park, developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), is the second of three parks being redeveloped along the ramparts of the Walled City. It is aimed at creating much-needed green and recreational space, particularly for residents of the Daryaganj and Old Delhi areas.

The park features formal lawns, white marble pathways, shaded eating plazas, baradaris, sculpted fountains, public amenities including toilets, and open recreational zones. One of its prominent attractions is a large sculpture depicting five white horses guided by a sarathi, symbolising leadership, momentum, and progress. The sculpture is surrounded by a water body and fountains, adding to the visual appeal of the space.

Further enhancing the park’s cultural character, four Yakshini sculptures by Padma Vibhushan awardee sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo have been installed along the linear lawns. A statue or bust of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is also proposed to be installed at the site.

A clock tower is currently under construction and is expected to add to the park’s architectural appeal. Plans are also in place for a food van facility near the parking area to provide refreshments for visitors.

With its scale and design, the park is being positioned as a distinctive urban green space in the national capital, offering residents and visitors a place for leisure, recreation, and community engagement within the densely populated Old Delhi region
