Astro Tourism Takes Off in Andamans with Full Moon Stargazing at Corbyn’s Cove

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 6:
In a novel push to promote nighttime tourism, the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with Andaman Stargazing, has announced a unique event aimed at introducing the concept of Astro tourism to the Islands. The program includes a public lecture and a free guided stargazing session scheduled for May 12 at Corbyn’s Cove Beach.

The event will run from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, coinciding with the full moon, a spectacle well-suited for celestial observation. The initiative is expected to appeal to a wide demographic, including tourists, students, astronomy enthusiasts, and nature lovers, encouraging a deeper engagement with the Islands’ unpolluted night skies.

Astrotourism, a niche segment of the global travel industry, leverages natural dark-sky locations for cosmic observation. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with their minimal light pollution, pristine beaches, and clear skies, are increasingly being recognised as a potential astro tourism hotspot.

Organisers aim to showcase how the Islands’ scenic nocturnal landscape can serve as a magnet for astronomy-related travel. The guided session will feature professional-grade telescopes and expert-led skywatching commentary, giving participants an educational and immersive experience.

The event is part of a broader effort by the Tourism Department to diversify travel experiences in the region. Traditionally known for its beaches, coral reefs, and historical sites, the Islands are now exploring alternative avenues such as eco-tourism, wellness retreats, and now, astrotourism.

Corbyn’s Cove, located just a short drive from Sri Vijaya Puram, has long been a popular spot for sunset views and beach outings. Its accessibility and ambient setting make it an ideal launchpad for nocturnal tourism initiatives.

While the May 12 session is a pilot, success could lead to more frequent stargazing nights, astronomy festivals, and possibly the establishment of permanent dark-sky parks in collaboration with scientific and tourism agencies.

Visitors are encouraged to bring minimal lighting, wear comfortable clothing, and carry curiosity. The event is free and open to all, with no prior registration required.
