Guwahati, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged ahead in the Assam Assembly election results on Monday, leading in a majority of seats, while Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi trailed behind BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami in the crucial Jorhat constituency after early rounds of counting.
According to official trends after the fifth round, Goswami secured 23,339 votes against Gogoi’s 15,326 votes, establishing a significant lead of 8,013 votes. The early numbers indicate a strong performance by the BJP in a seat closely watched due to Gogoi’s prominence within the Congress.
The development is being viewed as an early setback for the Congress party, which had hoped to consolidate gains in upper Assam. With counting still underway, party leaders remain cautious, awaiting further rounds to assess whether the gap can be narrowed.
Across the state, the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) showed clear dominance in initial trends, leading in around 78 seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance lagged behind with leads in approximately 25 constituencies. The early trends suggest a decisive advantage for the ruling alliance, though final results are expected later in the day as counting progresses.
The counting process is being conducted under tight security arrangements at multiple centres across Assam. Election officials stated that all protocols are being followed to ensure a smooth and transparent counting process.
The Assembly elections in Assam were held on April 9, witnessing a high voter turnout of 85.96 percent. The participation reflects strong electoral engagement from the state’s electorate of over 2.5 crore voters.
A total of 722 candidates contested the elections, including 59 women, marking a diverse and competitive political contest. The Congress fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed closely by the BJP with 90 candidates.
Among other key players, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) contested 30 seats. NDA allies such as the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) fielded 26 candidates, while the Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF) contested 11 seats.
On the opposition side, regional parties also made their presence felt. Raijor Dal fielded 13 candidates, Assam Jatiya Parishad contested 10 seats, CPI(M) fielded three candidates, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference contested two seats.
Additionally, parties such as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) contested 18 seats each, while the Trinamool Congress fielded 22 candidates and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) contested 16 seats. A significant number of 258 Independent candidates also entered the fray, adding to the competitive landscape.
Political analysts note that while early trends favor the BJP, the outcome in several constituencies could still shift as counting progresses through later rounds. The performance in key seats like Jorhat will be crucial in shaping the narrative of the election results.
As the day unfolds, all eyes remain on Assam’s counting centres, with clearer trends and final outcomes expected by evening. The results will determine whether the BJP retains its dominance in the state or if the opposition can stage a late comeback.
