Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates Nielit Digital University, Five New Centres

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday inaugurated the NIELIT Digital University (NDU), a new online platform designed to expand access to high-quality digital education across India. The launch, held in New Delhi, also saw the virtual inauguration of five new National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) centres in different states and Union Territories.

The new centres have been opened in Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Balasore (Odisha), Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Daman (Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu), and Lunglei (Mizoram). With their addition, NIELIT has further extended its reach to both urban and remote regions, strengthening its role in shaping India’s technological skill base.

The Digital University platform aims to democratise learning opportunities in niche technology areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Semiconductors. It will operate with flexible learning modules and virtual labs to help students acquire industry-relevant skills in a rapidly changing digital landscape. According to officials, the initiative is intended to prepare the youth for emerging opportunities in technology-driven sectors.

Speaking at the launch, Vaishnaw recalled that the idea of setting up a digital university was conceived three years ago and NIELIT emerged as the best choice for execution. He urged NIELIT to expand its partnerships with at least 500 companies, including those beyond the electronics and IT industries, to ensure that courses remain aligned with industry needs. “Wherever electronics and IT are in use, our goal must be to train and prepare students to meet those specific demands,” he said, adding that the electronics manufacturing sector has already grown into an industry worth Rs 13 lakh crore.

The event also marked the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between NIELIT and leading organisations such as Microsoft, Zscaler, CCRYN, Dixon Technologies, and Future Crime. These collaborations are expected to enhance industry-academia ties and boost the employability of students trained under NIELIT programs.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said the launch of the NDU platform would open a broader range of courses and bridge the gap between skills and employability. He emphasised that NIELIT has been providing technical education even in remote and difficult terrains, and the Digital University would now act as a catalyst for expanding opportunities further.

The NIELIT Digital University and the newly inaugurated centres are expected to strengthen India’s position in advanced technologies while supporting the government’s larger vision of building a digitally empowered society.
