Lt Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi Pays Tribute to Indian Army on Army Day

The Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd.), on Army Day today extended greetings and expressed gratitude to all ranks of the Indian Army, veterans, Veer Naris, civilian personnel and families of soldiers, acknowledging their role in safeguarding the nation and supporting the Armed Forces.

In his Army Day message, the Lieutenant Governor underscored the Indian Army’s responsibility in protecting India’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, describing the force as the country’s foremost shield. He highlighted the Army’s record of discipline, courage and professionalism in addressing security challenges across diverse and demanding conditions.

The message noted that beyond its core defence mandate, the Indian Army has repeatedly played a critical role during natural disasters, humanitarian crises and internal emergencies. According to the Lieutenant Governor, such interventions have strengthened the bond between the Army and the people, reinforcing public trust in the institution during times of crisis.

Referring to the Army’s legacy, the Lieutenant Governor said the history of valour and sacrifice displayed by soldiers continues to serve as a symbol of national pride. He stated that Army Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of soldiers who have served under challenging circumstances and often at great personal cost.

The Lieutenant Governor also drew attention to the ongoing transformation within the Indian Army in response to evolving security challenges. He noted that the force is undergoing modernisation through technological upgrades, innovation and restructuring aimed at enhancing operational readiness and strategic capabilities. This transformation, he said, reflects the Army’s intent to remain prepared for future threats and complex security environments.

In his message, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised that Army Day is a moment to honour the sacrifices of soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. He paid homage to martyrs and acknowledged their supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. The message also recognised the contribution of veterans, who continue to embody the values of service and commitment even after active duty.

The role of families of serving personnel and veterans was also highlighted. The Lieutenant Governor acknowledged their support and resilience, stating that the strength of soldiers is closely linked to the backing they receive from their families. He described this support system as an essential pillar sustaining the morale and resolve of the Armed Forces.

Army Day is observed annually to mark the commissioning of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949. The day is commemorated across the country to honour the service, discipline and sacrifices of Army personnel.

As Lieutenant Governor and Vice Chairman of the Islands Development Agency, Admiral Joshi also holds charge of a strategically significant territory that hosts India’s only tri-services command. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands play a key role in India’s maritime and defence architecture, making Army Day observances in the region particularly significant.

Concluding his message, the Lieutenant Governor stated that the Indian Army’s professionalism, commitment to duty and contribution to nation-building will remain a source of pride and inspiration for citizens. He reaffirmed respect for all those who serve and have served in the Indian Army, noting that their dedication continues to shape the nation’s security and confidence.
