An anti-drug awareness programme was held on June 16 at the Delanipur Sanitary Office as part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observances. Organised by the Directorate of Social Welfare, the event aligned with national efforts under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and was conducted in collaboration with local law enforcement, rehabilitation centres, and civil society groups.
The initiative aimed to inform citizens about the consequences of drug addiction and stress the importance of early intervention and rehabilitation. A street play and an original poem by the Swachhta Awareness Team served as the creative centrepieces of the programme, effectively communicating messages of sobriety, recovery, and social responsibility.
Targeting local workers and officials
The programme was attended by sanitary inspectors from Wards 3, 7, and 8, along with senior officials and Safai Mitras. The focus was on reaching out to sanitation workers and frontline municipal staff, creating awareness of how drug abuse impacts families and communities.
Such outreach efforts are part of a broader campaign to embed anti-addiction awareness at the grassroots level, particularly among groups that often remain outside formal intervention structures. Organisers stated that continued engagement will be ensured through workshops, campaigns, and community-driven counselling efforts.
Part of a nationwide movement
This event is one of many similar initiatives across the Union Territory designed to address the growing concern around drug use. The Social Welfare Department has lined up a series of awareness drives in different regions, including schools and panchayats, to foster community-based vigilance and promote drug-free environments.
Through theatre, poetry, and dialogue, the programme in Delanipur marked a creative yet serious step toward curbing substance abuse and building a more informed and resilient society.
