Angshuman Roy, State Secretary of the BJP in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, resigned from his position, citing dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of the proposed deemed-to-be university issue affecting students. He will continue as a member of the party.
He expressed frustration that the voices of him and other party leaders were ignored and stressed that he stands firmly in support of students. Roy said the administration failed to address concerns about the impact of the decision on students’ education, degrees, and academic future, prompting his resignation.
The move comes amid student unrest over the proposed transition of higher education institutions from Pondicherry University affiliation to a deemed-to-be university framework. The proposal has triggered protests and widespread debate among students advocating for consultation and clarity.
Roy clarified that his resignation reflects his support for students rather than a departure from the party. The development highlights the importance of considering student concerns in policy decisions and the challenge for political leaders to balance party responsibilities with protecting student interests in the Andaman Islands.
