Sri Vijaya Puram, May 5: In a compassionate initiative aimed at safeguarding stray animals and birds during the harsh summer months, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has launched a two-week-long “Water Bowl Campaign” across multiple locations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The campaign, which began on April 30, has been rolled out simultaneously at several government primary schools and key public locations, including Rajiv Nagar, Jetty Bazar, and Campbell Bay. In addition, similar activities were conducted in Mayabunder at Tugapur and Lal Tikrey under the Veterinary Hospital, Webi, as well as across several areas in Sri Vijaya Puram such as Bathubasti, Command, Haddo, Mini Bay, and Garacharma.
Officials stated that the primary objective of the campaign is to spread awareness and instil a sense of compassion among school children and the general public towards stray animals and birds, which often struggle to find water during peak summer when natural sources dry up.
As part of the initiative, AH&VS officials conducted awareness sessions in schools, educating students about the importance of providing clean drinking water to animals. Students were encouraged to take responsibility for regularly refilling water bowls placed within school premises and nearby areas, thereby fostering a culture of empathy and civic responsibility from a young age.
The campaign also emphasizes community participation, with authorities urging citizens, Panchayats, educational institutions, shopkeepers, and market associations to contribute actively. Residents have been encouraged to place water bowls in accessible locations such as outside homes, shops, offices, and marketplaces, ensuring that they are consistently filled with fresh and clean water.
Officials highlighted that even small acts of kindness, such as placing a bowl of water, can play a crucial role in saving the lives of thirsty animals and birds during extreme weather conditions. The initiative also seeks to build long-term awareness about animal welfare and environmental responsibility.
The Department noted that the campaign will continue over the next two weeks and is expected to expand to additional locations across the islands. Authorities believe that with sustained public cooperation, the initiative can significantly reduce the suffering of stray animals during the summer season.
Reaffirming its commitment to animal welfare, the AH&VS Department called upon all sections of society to join the movement and contribute towards creating a more humane and caring environment.
