Students across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands came together on June 23, 2025, to mark the first-ever celebration of International Olympic Day in the islands. The event was held in sync with global observances that honour the founding of the International Olympic Committee in 1894, and was coordinated by the Sports Section of the Directorate of Education in Sri Vijaya Puram.
The celebrations spanned schools in various regions and saw enthusiastic participation from students, educators, and local sports coordinators. The initiative aimed to build awareness of the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect, while also reinforcing the importance of physical fitness and sportsmanship among children.
Activities were designed to blend education and competition. Schools organised awareness sessions explaining the origins and purpose of the Olympic movement, along with drawing contests and multiple sports events. Students competed in a wide array of disciplines ranging from football and volleyball to table tennis, badminton, and chess. Athletics remained a popular choice, drawing high participation and spirited performance.
Quiz competitions focused on the history of the Olympic Games and celebrated athletes provided students with a chance to engage more deeply with the legacy of global sports. These events helped foster an understanding of international sports culture and inspired a sense of global connectedness.
The Directorate of Education played a central role in mobilising schools to actively engage in these events. Under the guidance of the Director (Education), the Sports Section provided logistical and organisational support to ensure smooth conduct of events across various educational institutions. The emphasis was not only on competition but also on inclusivity, with students from diverse backgrounds given equal opportunity to participate.
Officials said the Olympic Day activities were not merely symbolic but served as a practical tool to deepen the sports culture in schools. In an environment where academic pressures often overshadow physical education, such events act as a timely reminder of the importance of holistic development.
Educators observed that students showcased a high level of discipline, teamwork, and integrity throughout the celebrations, echoing the values that the Olympic movement seeks to instil. The presence of structured sporting competitions in the academic calendar is seen as a positive step towards building healthier habits and resilience among youth.
Parents, too, responded positively to the initiative, noting that their children returned home with a sense of pride and enthusiasm after participating. Many expressed hope that such events would be held regularly and eventually evolve into inter-school or regional competitions.
The introduction of Olympic Day in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands marks a significant stride in integrating global values at the grassroots level. As schools become arenas for shaping young minds and bodies, such initiatives underscore the growing emphasis on fitness, global awareness, and character-building in the region’s education framework.
