The Andaman and Nicobar Police Department bid farewell to one of its most trusted members, K-9 Badshah, a German Shepherd who served the force and community with loyalty and courage for more than seven years. Badshah passed away on August 16, 2025, due to illness, leaving behind a legacy of dedication that will be remembered across the islands.
Born on June 5, 2018, Badshah was trained at the National Training Centre for Dogs, BSF Academy, Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh, where he underwent a rigorous nine-month tracker course. After completing training, he officially joined the Andaman and Nicobar Police in June 2019. From then on, he became a vital part of the force, assisting police stations across the union territory in numerous critical operations.
Over the course of seven years, two months, and eleven days, Badshah’s service stood out for both skill and commitment. His sharp instincts played a crucial role in solving cases ranging from theft investigations and murder probes to locating missing persons. He was also instrumental in tracking criminals, making him an invaluable asset to law enforcement in the islands.
In addition to his operational duties, Badshah represented the department at several ceremonial events, including Passing Out Parades, Republic Day celebrations, and Raising Day ceremonies. His disciplined presence at these occasions made him a recognisable figure within the police force.
The Police Department acknowledged that Badshah’s contribution went beyond his professional responsibilities. Known for his gentle temperament and affectionate nature, he was a beloved companion to his handlers and officers. For those who worked alongside him, Badshah was not only a working partner but also a friend who brought comfort during challenging times.
To honour his service, the Police Dog Squad Unit organised a wreath-laying and memorial ceremony on August 16. Officers and staff gathered to pay their respects, marking the end of a remarkable journey of service. The ceremony reflected the deep bond between the canine squad and the police department, and the irreplaceable role dogs like Badshah play in policing.
Badshah’s handlers were singled out for recognition, with the department noting their exceptional devotion and care throughout his years of service. Their close relationship ensured that Badshah was not only well-trained and effective but also nurtured with affection and attention.
The loss of Badshah has left a noticeable void in the force, particularly in the Police Dog Squad Unit. His legacy, however, will live on in the cases he helped solve, the people he helped protect, and the memories shared by those who worked alongside him. For the Andaman and Nicobar Police, his service stands as a reminder of the unique role K-9 units play in modern policing.
Across the islands, where challenging terrain and dispersed communities often test law enforcement, dogs like Badshah provide vital support that technology alone cannot replace. His ability to track, detect, and respond in real time made him a trusted partner in operations where time and accuracy were critical.
As the department reflects on his passing, the message is clear: K-9 Badshah’s contribution to the safety and security of the islands was immeasurable. His years of loyal service have set an example for future canine units, and his memory will remain a part of the A&N Police legacy.
The farewell to Badshah was not just the closure of a chapter but a tribute to an enduring partnership between human officers and their canine companions. For the men and women of the Andaman and Nicobar Police, the absence of Badshah will be deeply felt, but his spirit of service and loyalty will continue to inspire.
