Two Gram Panchayat leaders from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have received national-level recognition for their contribution to grassroots governance, placing the Union Territory in focus during a Republic Day eve ceremony held in the national capital.
The honours were conferred by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj during a special function organised on January 25, 2026, recognising exemplary elected Panchayat representatives from across the country. The ceremony, held on the eve of the 77th Republic Day, acknowledged sustained efforts by village-level leaders in strengthening local self-governance and democratic participation.
The recognition was awarded to the Pradhans of Kishori Nagar Gram Panchayat and Sippighat Gram Panchayat, reflecting what officials described as the emergence of dynamic grassroots leadership from the islands. The selection of two representatives from the Union Territory at a national forum was seen as a significant moment for local governance institutions in the region.

According to the Ministry, the awards were aimed at highlighting the role of Panchayati Raj institutions in driving rural development, transparency, and participatory decision-making. The event brought together elected representatives from states and Union Territories who have demonstrated consistent engagement with village-level planning, implementation of development initiatives, and community participation.
During the ceremony, emphasis was laid on the importance of Panchayat leaders as the first point of contact between citizens and the state. The Ministry noted that effective functioning of Gram Panchayats remains central to the delivery of public services, implementation of welfare schemes, and strengthening of democratic practices at the grassroots level.
The contributions of the two island Panchayat leaders were noted in the context of village-level development initiatives, efforts to improve service delivery, and measures aimed at enhancing quality of life in rural areas. Officials present at the event underlined that recognition of such efforts is intended to encourage replication of best practices across other Panchayats.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, along with Panchayat representatives from various parts of the country, attended the function. The ceremony also served as a platform for exchange of experiences among local government representatives working in diverse geographical and social contexts.
The recognition comes at a time when Panchayati Raj institutions in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are increasingly being positioned as key drivers of rural development, particularly in areas such as sanitation, livelihood support, infrastructure creation, and community welfare. Administrators have repeatedly highlighted the role of local leadership in adapting national schemes to island-specific conditions.
Officials in the Union Territory administration said the national recognition was expected to motivate other Gram Panchayats across the islands to strengthen participatory governance and improve institutional performance. The acknowledgment at the national level was also seen as reinforcing the visibility of the islands within broader discussions on rural governance and decentralisation.
The Republic Day eve honours are part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to showcase effective Panchayati Raj leadership and promote accountability and innovation at the village level. For the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the recognition has been positioned as both an achievement and a benchmark for future grassroots governance initiatives.
