The New Year Self Help Group (SHG) Mela, organised by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands National Rural Livelihood Mission (ANIRLM) under the Department of Rural Development, concluded successfully at Marina Park on January 4, 2026, following an eight-day exhibition that began on December 27, 2025. The event witnessed strong public turnout and enthusiastic support for SHG-produced items, highlighting the potential of local entrepreneurship in the Islands.
A total of 154 SHG members participated in the Mela, showcasing an extensive range of locally made products. These included handicrafts, coconut oil, soaps, pickles, fast food items, traditional sweets, ice creams, smoothies, and South Indian cuisines. The exhibition drew participants not only from Sri Vijaya Puram but also from Rangat, Mayabunder, Diglipur, and Tamil Nadu, reflecting a broad engagement of communities across the region.

The Mela recorded total sales of approximately Rs. 4 lakh, underlining the growing market demand for SHG products and the economic potential of small-scale local industries. Participating members expressed appreciation for the Department of Rural Development and the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, acknowledging their continuous support and facilitation that enabled such initiatives.
The SHG Mela provided an interactive platform for local entrepreneurs to directly engage with consumers, build networks, and receive feedback on product quality and innovation. Organisers emphasised that the event not only promoted economic empowerment for women and community-based groups but also strengthened local supply chains and created opportunities for skill development and market exposure.
The Department of Rural Development said the initiative is part of a larger effort to boost livelihood opportunities in the Islands, enhance self-reliance, and encourage entrepreneurship among marginalized and rural populations. By integrating traditional skills with modern business practices, the initiative aims to create sustainable income sources while preserving local culture and craftsmanship.
Officials noted that the overwhelming public response to the Mela indicated both an appreciation for quality local products and a rising awareness of the value of supporting community enterprises. Such events are expected to be conducted regularly to provide continuous exposure and business opportunities for SHG members, further contributing to socio-economic development across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
