The Andaman and Nicobar Administration will join the nationwide celebration of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 150th birth anniversary through a year-long series of activities highlighting his enduring legacy of national unity and good governance. The Government of India has launched a special initiative, “Sardar@150,” under the Ministry of Culture, to commemorate the Iron Man of India’s contributions to the country’s unity, integrity, and administrative consolidation.
The campaign, themed around five pillars, Unity and Nation Building, Good Governance, Empowering Youth, Rural Development, and Cultural Integrity, seeks to revive the values Patel stood for. It aims to inspire citizens, especially the younger generation, to uphold the spirit of unity in diversity that was central to his vision for India. As part of this effort, various events such as exhibitions, lectures, debates, patriotic runs, and cultural programmes will be organised across the country.
In alignment with this national movement, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has planned a series of commemorative events that will unfold across the islands over the coming year. These include seminars, essay and painting competitions, heritage walks, cleanliness drives, plantation campaigns, sports meets, and exhibitions in schools, colleges, and community centres. The objective, officials said, is to celebrate Sardar Patel’s vision by encouraging public participation and reinforcing the principles of unity, integrity, and service.
A major highlight of the celebrations will be the observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. To mark the occasion, the administration will organise a Run for Unity at 6 am from the Netaji Stadium main gate. The route will cover several central locations in Port Blair, including Clock Tower, Bengali Club, SVPMC Office, and Aberdeen Bazaar, before returning to Netaji Stadium. Participants have been requested to assemble at the venue by 5.50 am.
Before the run commences, a Unity Pledge will be administered to all participants. The pledge underscores the importance of maintaining the nation’s sovereignty, peace, and integrity while reinforcing the timeless value of unity in diversity. The administration has urged citizens to take part in the event to collectively affirm their commitment to these ideals.
The “Sardar@150” celebrations will not be limited to Port Blair. Similar Unity Runs, Pledge Ceremonies, and Mass Participation Events will be held across districts and inhabited islands to ensure inclusive participation. The Department of Art and Culture will also host a patriotic song programme at the District Jail in Prothrapur at 3.30 pm on October 31. Earlier in the day, an on-the-spot quiz for visitors at the historic Cellular Jail will engage participants in a learning experience dedicated to the legacy of Sardar Patel.
To make the celebrations more accessible and interactive, the Ministry of Culture has introduced a digital outreach component through the MY Bharat portal. A dedicated section titled “Sardar@150” will feature prominently on the portal’s homepage, serving as the central hub for all events and competitions related to the anniversary. The platform will allow users to navigate easily through different activities, from Unity Marches and Reel Competitions to Podcasts and cultural programmes, creating a digital trail of participation.
Registrations for the national-level competitions began on October 2 and will remain open until November 2. The Ministry expects strong participation from youth and cultural groups across the country, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where educational institutions and local organisations have been encouraged to contribute to the initiative.
The year-long celebration of Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary is envisioned as more than a tribute; it is a national reaffirmation of unity, integrity, and collective progress. For the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the initiative serves as an opportunity to connect the spirit of the archipelago’s diverse communities with the larger national fabric, a fitting homage to the man who united India’s princely states into one nation.
