The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has approved the improvement of two key road infrastructure projects under the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), aimed at enhancing connectivity and easing travel for residents and visitors.
The sanctioned projects include the upgradation of State Highway-08 from Manglutan Junction to Wandoor Beach and the improvement of a rural road connecting Pump House to Ayyanar Temple at Calicut. The estimated cost for the State Highway-08 project is Rs. 9,94,39,192, while the Calicut road improvement has been approved at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,95,49,366.
State Highway-08, which originates at Manglutan Junction, serves as an important arterial route linking Sri Vijaya Puram with Wandoor, a prominent tourist destination in South Andaman. According to officials, the proposed improvement of the 6-kilometre stretch is expected to significantly enhance road quality and improve travel conditions for commuters and tourists alike.
The upgradation of this stretch is anticipated to contribute to smoother traffic flow and improved riding comfort, which officials believe could support tourism-related movement to Wandoor Beach and surrounding areas. The highway is a frequently used route for both local residents and visitors accessing the coastal tourism zone.
The second project focuses on the improvement of the rural road from Pump House to Ayyanar Temple at Calicut. This road is considered a critical link between Garacharma and Calicut and has been a long-standing demand from the local population. Officials said the upgraded road will improve accessibility for residents and reduce travel distance to essential facilities.
Once completed, the improved Calicut road is expected to shorten the distance to the proposed District Hospital and nearby educational institutions by more than six kilometres. The reduction in travel distance is likely to ease daily commuting for residents and improve access to healthcare and education services.
The Administration has also indicated plans to introduce bus services on the Calicut road following the completion of the improvement works. Officials noted that improved road conditions would support public transport operations and enhance connectivity for residents who rely on bus services for daily travel.
Both projects form part of the Administration’s broader efforts to strengthen road infrastructure across the islands, particularly in areas where connectivity plays a key role in access to services, tourism movement, and local economic activity.
The sanctioned works are expected to be taken up by the APWD as per approved specifications, with officials stating that the projects aim to address infrastructure gaps while responding to public demand for improved road conditions.
