A woman was killed and her husband critically injured after a violent clash over a long-standing land dispute turned fatal in Guptapara, Sri Vijaya Puram, on March 30. The incident occurred between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM as members of two families were clearing land ahead of the monsoon planting season, escalating a years-old conflict into deadly violence.
According to sources, a man aged around 19–20 allegedly attacked the couple with a machete during the altercation. The woman died on the spot, while her husband sustained severe injuries. He was first taken to Manglutan Hospital and later shifted to GB Pant Hospital for advanced treatment, where he remains under medical observation.
The land dispute between the two families dates back nearly two decades and is currently under court consideration. The area is also part of an ongoing revenue survey, with boundaries yet to be clearly defined, contributing to repeated tensions.
Police reached the scene after residents alerted them. The accused reportedly went to a Ward Member’s house following the attack and confessed before being taken into custody. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and legal proceedings will follow.
Gram Pradhan Durlabh Das said Ward Member Meghnath informed him about the incident around 6:15 PM. He noted that local leaders had earlier advised both families to maintain distance due to the pending court case. However, the lack of clearly marked boundaries continued to trigger disputes. He added that authorities have limited scope for intervention as the matter remains sub judice and under revenue survey.
The incident has shocked the local community, highlighting the risks associated with unresolved land conflicts. Police have urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with the investigation.
Investigators are collecting evidence and recording witness statements to establish the sequence of events. The accused has been arrested, and further action is underway in accordance with legal procedures. The case remains under investigation.
