Sri Vijaya Puram, April 15: A 21-year-old courier boy from Sippighat, employed with a well-known national courier service company, was arrested by Aberdeen Police after he was caught red-handed with a parcel containing 205 grams of ganja. The arrest was made at the company’s Dean Street office, following a tip-off received through intelligence sources, police department sources told The Wave Andaman.
The operation was led by Sub-Inspector Abhishek Halder and supervised by the SDPO of South Andaman. Acting swiftly, the police team intercepted the courier boy just before he could collect the suspicious package. During the search, officials recovered ganja concealed inside a navy blue denim trouser, tightly wrapped in black plastic.
Ganja, also known as cannabis, is a psychoactive drug derived from the cannabis plant. It is classified as a banned narcotic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Possession of small quantities intended for personal use can lead to imprisonment of up to one year, while possession of commercial quantities intended for trafficking can attract a rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years, along with a fine.
In recent years, narcotics trafficking has been on the rise in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with several cases involving the use of courier and shipping networks to smuggle banned substances, police department sources told The Wave Andaman. Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts across courier hubs, entry points, and other vulnerable locations in the region.
An investigation is currently underway to trace the source of the seized ganja and identify any broader network involved. Police officials have urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity linked to drugs, reiterating their firm commitment to a drug-free Andaman and Nicobar
