A&N Administration Invites Applications for Night-time Stargazing to Promote Astro Tourism

The Department of Tourism, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, has invited applications from interested individuals and registered astro tourism operators to conduct organised stargazing activities at identified locations across South Andaman and North and Middle Andaman districts.

According to the notification issued by the department, the initiative is aimed at promoting astro tourism as an eco-friendly and sustainable tourism activity while creating income and employment opportunities for local operators. The stargazing activities are proposed to be conducted during night hours at select coastal and island locations known for low light pollution and favourable viewing conditions.

In North and Middle Andaman district, the proposed locations include Karmatang Beach in Mayabunder and Ramnagar Beach in Diglipur. In South Andaman district, stargazing activities have been proposed at Beodnabad, Burmanallah, Kodiyaghat (sea-shore area), and Viper Island.

The department stated that permissions will be extended to eligible applicants to organise stargazing programmes for tourists and astro enthusiasts at these locations, subject to adherence to sustainable tourism practices and conservation norms. The initiative is expected to support the growth of niche tourism while ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Officials said the objective of the programme is to promote astro tourism as a responsible tourism activity that aligns with conservation principles. The initiative also seeks to encourage collaboration among astro tourists, local communities and scientific institutions to enhance awareness and knowledge of celestial bodies and night-sky observation.

The administration has emphasised that the programme is intended to support local astro tourism operators who follow sustainable practices. By providing structured opportunities for night-sky tourism, the initiative aims to diversify tourism offerings in the islands beyond conventional beach and water-based activities.

Interested applicants willing to organise stargazing activities are required to submit their applications in writing to the Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism (IP&T), Andaman and Nicobar Administration. The last date for submission of applications is February 10, 2026.

The move comes as part of broader efforts by the tourism department to promote alternative and experience-based tourism segments in the islands, while balancing tourism development with environmental protection. Astro tourism, which relies on dark-sky environments and minimal infrastructure, is increasingly being viewed as a low-impact tourism model suitable for ecologically sensitive regions.

The department has not announced the number of permissions to be granted or the duration for which stargazing activities will be allowed at each site. Further guidelines regarding operational norms, safety measures and environmental compliance are expected to be issued during the permission process.

With the islands offering relatively low light pollution and clear skies in several locations, officials believe astro tourism has the potential to emerge as a niche attraction, drawing tourists interested in astronomy, night photography and scientific exploration, while also supporting local livelihoods.
