As part of the ongoing Anti-Drug Awareness Week from June 23 to 28, the Directorate of Education’s Science Wing and healthcare institutions across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands organized a series of interactive campaigns to sensitise students and communities about the dangers of drug abuse.
Day three of the programme, themed ‘Painting Day’, witnessed the enthusiastic participation of over 100 students from Sri Vijaya Puram at the State Library in Middle Point. The event divided participants into junior (Classes VI-VIII) and senior (Classes IX-XII) categories. Juniors engaged in a poster-making competition centred on the message Say No to Drugs, while senior students designed logos for anti-drug T-shirts, creatively conveying themes of resistance and awareness.
In another innovative activity called Value Tree, students shared personal values that encourage a disciplined lifestyle and discourage substance use. The programme included daily recap sessions to encourage reflection and personal engagement with the themes discussed.
Meanwhile, in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, a community outreach programme was held at CHC Nancowry. Healthcare workers performed a socially themed skit that explored the impact of drug dependency on families and community life.
The initiative drew participation from medical staff, tribal captains, and local community members. The venue featured banners and slogans promoting a drug-free lifestyle, and the event concluded with a pledge ceremony where all attendees committed to supporting de-addiction and public health efforts.

Director of Education Vikram Singh addressed the students and shared a motivational story, reinforcing the message of making wise life choices. CHC Nancowry’s medical team, led by Medical Officer In-Charge Dr. (Lt. Col.) Nirmal Kumar Bajpai, reiterated their commitment to preventive health and community engagement in tackling substance abuse.
The week-long drive continues with an anti-drug awareness rally scheduled to start from Cellular Jail and end at the State Library on June 26, marking a symbolic call to action through one of the most historic routes in the islands.
