Schools in A&N Islands Sensitize Students on Substance Abuse and POCSO Act

In a concerted effort to safeguard children’s well-being and promote a safer learning environment, the Science Wing of the Directorate of Education, A&N Administration, organized a mega education and awareness programme across all Education Zones on 22 September. The initiative was conducted in active collaboration with the A&N Police, Directorate of Health Services, Department of Social Welfare, and various non-governmental organizations.

The programme aimed to sensitize school students on critical issues including the harmful effects of tobacco and drug use, provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and awareness about sexual abuse. By addressing these topics, organizers sought to equip students with knowledge and practical guidance to protect themselves and respond appropriately in vulnerable situations.

A total of 7,234 students participated in the programme, making it one of the largest awareness drives in recent years. The sessions were designed to be interactive, incorporating awareness videos, PowerPoint presentations, and discussions that engaged students directly. Experts highlighted the dangers of substance abuse, the long-term health implications of tobacco and drugs, and the legal provisions in place to protect children against sexual exploitation.

The initiative also emphasized empowering students with knowledge about where and how to seek help if they face harassment, abuse, or pressure to engage in harmful activities. Organizers stressed that education and awareness at a young age are essential to building resilience and encouraging responsible behavior among students.

The Director of Education, A&N Islands, noted that such programmes would be conducted on a regular basis. Announcing a new initiative, the director stated that education and awareness sessions will now be held every Saturday in different schools, ensuring ongoing outreach and engagement with young minds throughout the islands.

Officials involved in the programme highlighted the importance of collaboration between education authorities, law enforcement, health services, and social welfare organizations to create a comprehensive approach to child protection. The integrated effort ensures that students are not only informed about the risks of substance abuse and sexual offenses but are also guided toward available resources for support and intervention.

By reaching thousands of students across multiple zones simultaneously, the Directorate of Education aims to foster a culture of awareness, prevention, and safety in schools. This initiative represents a proactive step toward building a healthier, safer, and more informed student community in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
