Sri Vijaya Puram, April 25: In a significant move to promote academic research and historical inquiry, the Andaman & Nicobar Archives inaugurated a dedicated Reference Room for research scholars on Friday. The facility was formally opened by Smitha R, IAS, Secretary (Archives), in a modest ceremony held at the Archives complex in Sri Vijaya Puram.
Designed to support students, scholars, and members of the public interested in the history of the islands, the newly inaugurated Reference Room is equipped with essential research infrastructure. It is expected to serve as a valuable resource for those delving into the unique and often under-explored historical narratives of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Speaking at the inauguration, Secretary Smitha R called upon undergraduate and postgraduate students, particularly those pursuing history, from local colleges to take full advantage of the facility. She encouraged them to register as research scholars under the Public Records Rules, 1997, to gain structured access to the archival material and deepen their engagement with the rich heritage of the archipelago.
The establishment of the Reference Room is seen as part of a broader initiative to make archival resources more accessible and usable for educational purposes. Scholars will now be able to work in a dedicated space, furnished with tools necessary for reading, referencing, and note-taking.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at bridging the gap between historical resources and aspiring researchers in the region, while also fostering a culture of documentation and academic study.
The Andaman & Nicobar Archives holds a treasure trove of public records, including administrative documents, correspondences, and other official materials that offer valuable insights into the socio-political and cultural evolution of the islands.
With the opening of this facility, the Archives hopes to see a rise in the number of local scholars engaging with the region’s past through formal research.
