DBRAIT’s Amrika Das to Represent A&N Islands in National Marathon at Dimapur

A student of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT), Sri Vijayapuram, has brought recognition to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands by qualifying to represent the Union Territory in the National Level Marathon being held at Dimapur, Nagaland. The event is organized as part of the Red Ribbon Club (RRC) activities under the Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS), Department of Health Services.

Ms. Amrika Das, a first-year student of Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at DBRAIT, earned the opportunity after securing second position in the girls’ category at the recently held State Level Marathon. The competition was conducted under the guidance of Nodal Officer (RRC) Altamash Mustafa and ANACS as part of the ongoing awareness initiatives promoting health and youth engagement through sports.

Her achievement has been celebrated within the DBRAIT community as a milestone for the institution and an inspiration for fellow students. The institute’s management and faculty extended their congratulations to Amrika for bringing pride to the campus and wished her success at the national event in Dimapur. Her selection reflects both sporting excellence and active participation of students from the islands in national-level platforms.

The Red Ribbon Club initiative aims to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention, health education, and social responsibility through youth-driven programs. Athletic events such as marathons form a vital part of its outreach, combining physical fitness with messages of awareness and solidarity. Amrika’s participation at the national level is thus seen as not only a sporting honour but also a contribution to the broader social mission of the campaign.

In a separate academic initiative at DBRAIT, the Department of Civil Engineering organized an expert lecture on “Open Channel Flow and Hydraulic Machines” for its B.Tech Civil Engineering students. The lecture was coordinated by Assistant Professor Altamash Mustafa under the course Mechanics of Fluids and aimed at enriching classroom learning with professional insights.

The session was delivered by P. Umamaheshwara Rao, Environmental Engineer with the Andaman & Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), Department of Science and Technology. Rao, an alumnus of IIT Delhi, discussed the practical importance of hydraulics in environmental and civil engineering, particularly in the context of the islands’ unique geographic and ecological conditions.

The expert talk focused on bridging theoretical principles with industry applications, helping students understand how fluid mechanics and hydraulic machinery concepts are utilized in real-world environmental management, water resource engineering, and infrastructure design.

According to DBRAIT, such interactive sessions are part of a broader effort to integrate technical education with experiential learning. Under the leadership and motivation of Principal Prof. Sanmukh Kaur, the institute has been encouraging faculty to organize professional lectures, workshops, and technical exchanges that align classroom studies with field-oriented knowledge.

By combining academic initiatives with student achievements in extracurricular and national events, DBRAIT continues to foster holistic development among its students. The dual success, Amrika’s selection for the National Marathon and the Civil Engineering Department’s academic outreach, underscores the institute’s growing emphasis on both intellectual and physical excellence.

With Amrika Das set to represent the Andaman & Nicobar Islands at the National Marathon in Dimapur, DBRAIT’s reputation as an active participant in national-level initiatives in education, sports, and youth awareness continues to strengthen, reflecting the spirit of achievement and learning that defines the institute.
