Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah arrived in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on January 2 as part of an official visit during which he is scheduled to inaugurate multiple development projects and attend events related to legal reforms.
On arrival at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Sri Vijaya Puram, the Union Home Minister was received by Lieutenant Governor Admiral D. K. Joshi (Retd.), who is also Vice Chairman of the Islands Development Agency. Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray, Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Director General of Police Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, along with senior officers of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and public representatives, were also present to receive him.
The visit forms part of the Union government’s continued engagement with the Union Territory, focusing on development initiatives and administrative outreach.
According to the official schedule, Amit Shah will inaugurate and witness an exhibition on the “New Criminal Laws” at the ITF Ground on January 3. The exhibition is expected to highlight key changes introduced under recently enacted criminal law reforms and their implementation framework.
Later the same day, the Union Home Minister is scheduled to electronically inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several landmark development projects in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The programme will be held at Netaji Stadium at 3.30 pm on January 3. These projects are aimed at strengthening infrastructure and supporting the overall development of the islands.
Following the inauguration and foundation stone-laying ceremony, Amit Shah will address the gathering. The event will also be attended by the Lieutenant Governor, the Member of Parliament from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, senior officials of the administration and other dignitaries.
Officials stated that the visit underscores the Centre’s focus on accelerating development and administrative reforms in the strategically located island territory. The programmes scheduled during the visit are expected to highlight both governance initiatives and infrastructure expansion efforts.
Security arrangements across Sri Vijaya Puram and other key locations have been strengthened in view of the high-profile visit, with coordination among civil administration and police authorities.
