The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), India’s sole tri-service operational command, has a new leader at the helm. On October 1, 2025, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, AVSM, NM assumed charge as the 19th Commander-in-Chief of the ANC, bringing with him nearly four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Navy.
A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Warfare, Kochhar was commissioned into the Navy on July 1, 1988. Over the course of 37 years, he has held multiple pivotal roles shaping India’s maritime capability. His career has been defined by both frontline operational command and strategic leadership in naval development projects.
Kochhar’s sea commands include five warships, among them the country’s only aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, where he served as the third commanding officer. Earlier, he commissioned the Talwar-class guided missile frigate INS Trikand in Russia, a significant milestone in India’s naval expansion. These frontline responsibilities gave him extensive experience in blue-water operations, an expertise now vital for managing India’s presence in the Indo-Pacific.
Beyond his command of warships, the Vice Admiral’s leadership extended into naval modernization. As Assistant Controller Carrier Projects and Assistant Controller Warship Production & Acquisition, he oversaw complex shipbuilding and acquisition programmes that strengthened the Navy’s long-term combat readiness.
His flag-rank appointments have been equally consequential. He served as Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, Commandant of the National Defence Academy, and Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet. His tenure leading the Western Fleet was particularly notable, earning him the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2022 for distinguished service. He was earlier awarded the Nausena Medal (NM) in 2013.
Kochhar is an alumnus of several prestigious institutions: the National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla), Defence Services Staff College, Naval War College Mumbai, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK. These academic foundations complement his operational expertise with a strategic understanding of maritime security in a global context.
The Andaman and Nicobar Command he now leads plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s national interests in the Indian Ocean Region. As the country’s only integrated command comprising the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, the ANC is central to India’s Indo-Pacific strategy, maritime surveillance, and humanitarian assistance operations.
Vice Admiral Kochhar’s leadership is expected to strengthen operational readiness and jointness across the Armed Forces stationed in the islands. His experience in both fleet command and naval acquisition gives him the rare ability to balance immediate operational needs with long-term force modernization.
As the ANC faces mounting strategic challenges in the Indian Ocean, Vice Admiral Kochhar’s appointment underscores India’s emphasis on experienced leadership in safeguarding its maritime frontiers. His career trajectory, marked by warship command, naval modernization, and tri-service integration, positions him uniquely to lead the command into its next phase.
