Sri Vijaya Puram, June 15: A large gathering of cyclists, tourism stakeholders and fitness enthusiasts came together at North Bay on Saturday as the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO), in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Cycling Association of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, organised a World Bicycle Day Rally under the ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestones by Inspiring Women) League initiative.
The event was aimed at encouraging fitness, promoting environmentally sustainable modes of transport and strengthening awareness about responsible tourism practices in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Participants assembled at Chatham Jetty in the early hours before proceeding to North Bay, where the cycling rally was conducted along a designated route beginning at Chuna Bhatta and concluding at North Bay.
The rally was flagged off by Jyoti Kumari, Secretary (Tourism), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, who attended the programme as chief guest. In a gesture that drew appreciation from participants, she joined the cyclists and completed the route alongside them.
Addressing participants, Jyoti Kumari highlighted cycling as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation that contributes to both individual health and environmental conservation. She encouraged greater public participation in activities that promote wellness, sustainability and responsible lifestyles.
Organisers said the programme was designed to align with broader efforts to encourage green mobility while showcasing the potential of cycling as a recreational and tourism-oriented activity in the islands. With growing attention on sustainable tourism worldwide, the rally sought to underline how eco-friendly practices can be integrated into everyday life as well as tourism experiences.
The event witnessed participation from members of AATO, representatives of various tourism associations, local cyclists, sports enthusiasts and members of the public. The turnout reflected increasing interest in cycling as both a fitness activity and a sustainable transport alternative.
A key attraction of the programme was the ASMITA League Cycling Event, which focuses on encouraging greater participation of women in sports and physical activities. In the women’s competition, Anushka Lall secured the top position, while Nishi Sharma and Ahana Biswas finished as first and second runners-up respectively.
The World Bicycle Day Cycling Rally competition also recognised top performers among participants. Prince Kumar emerged as the winner, followed by Shaaran Singh Bisht in second place and M. Sabari Krishnan in third place.
Speaking during the event, M. Vinod, President of AATO, emphasised the role of tourism stakeholders in promoting environmentally responsible practices and congratulated participants for their enthusiastic involvement. He noted that such initiatives help create awareness about sustainable living while encouraging community participation.
Participation certificates were distributed to all registered cyclists, while winners and outstanding performers received prizes in various categories. Organisers said the programme generated considerable awareness about the health benefits of cycling and the importance of adopting environmentally conscious habits.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Saikat Biswas, General Secretary of AATO. He acknowledged the support extended by the Tourism Department, Sports Authority of India, Cycling Association of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Police Department, Health Department, volunteers, media representatives and participants in ensuring the success of the programme.
The rally forms part of a growing series of initiatives aimed at integrating sports, wellness and environmental responsibility into the tourism ecosystem of the islands. Organisers said such programmes not only encourage healthier lifestyles but also reinforce the message that sustainable development and tourism growth can go hand in hand.
AATO stated that it intends to continue organising similar events in the future to promote fitness, environmental awareness, community participation and sustainable tourism development across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
