Farm-tastic Trails! Agro Eco Walk At CIARI

Date:

Sri Vijay Puram, April 16: If you’ve ever wanted a slice of nature with a side of science, here’s your golden chance. Starting April 21, 2025, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) will throw open its sprawling Sippighat and Garacharma farms to the public under its new initiative – DweepAgro Eco Walk.

Blending ecotourism with agricultural education, the guided walk offers an immersive, hands-on experience of the Islands’ vibrant agro-biodiversity and sustainable farming practices.

What’s in store?

At Sippighat Farm, visitors will traverse spice plantations, the renowned World Coconut Germplasm Centre (housing rare coconut varieties), and a fully functional spice processing unit that showcases post-harvest innovations. Nature lovers can enjoy the Mangrove Viewpoint’s tranquil vistas and pick up fresh produce from the Farm Sale Point.

Garacharma Farm brings a different vibe altogether. Named attractions include the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Ayurvatika, a medicinal garden honoring India’s “Missile Man”, and the Nakshatra Garden, where astrology meets agriculture through plants linked to the 27 celestial constellations. There’s also a horticulture nursery with native flora, an ornamental fish breeding unit, fancy birds, and even a fish spa – making it a great spot for both kids and curious minds.

Open from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, the entry will be ticketed, with passes available directly at the respective farm sale counters.

This innovative initiative aims to raise public awareness on sustainable agriculture, soil health, and biodiversity conservation, all while offering a fun and educational outing. Tourists, students, and residents are encouraged to participate and walk the green path.
