Storm Warning Issued for June 19 as Monsoon Intensifies in Andaman

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 18 — The South Andaman District Administration has issued a weather alert ahead of an anticipated thunder squall on June 19, as the monsoon system intensifies over the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph and lightning are likely at isolated places across the district.

The Bay of Bengal, known for its volatile early monsoon activity, has seen a build-up of moisture-laden winds over the past week. Meteorologists note that the convergence of southwesterly monsoon currents with local convective systems often triggers sudden squalls and thunderstorms across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during this transitional phase. These weather patterns are typical in June, particularly around the onset of the southwest monsoon.

Across mainland India, the monsoon has advanced into parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal, bringing widespread rainfall and relief from the pre-monsoon heat. However, isolated incidents of flooding and crop damage have also been reported from low-lying areas in eastern and central India. The IMD expects the monsoon to continue its gradual northward progress over the coming days, supported by favourable wind conditions and active pressure systems over the Bay.

In preparation, the district administration has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to landslides or where dangerous tree falls may occur during storms. Patrols have been increased, and surveillance has been stepped up in vulnerable pockets to enable quick response in case of emergencies.

Residents are urged to avoid travel during periods of heavy rainfall, secure loose items in and around their homes, and stay tuned to official bulletins for further updates. The administration has also activated 24×7 emergency helplines for public assistance during the weather event.

This is the first major storm advisory of the season, coming as monsoon conditions take hold across the archipelago.
