Sri Vijaya Puram, October 23: Coastal communities across 30 villages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are being brought under a tsunami awareness and preparedness programme aimed at strengthening their ability to respond to potential emergencies. The initiative began with outreach activities in Mithakhari, Nilambur and Champin, as the Administration moves to improve disaster readiness at the village level.
The Directorate of Disaster Management has prepared a calendar of activities under the Tsunami Ready Programme, which commenced on October 21, 2026.
The first outreach and preparedness sessions took place on October 22 in Mithakhari village of South Andaman, Nilambur village in Baratang and Champin village in Nancowry.
The respective sub-divisional authorities and village-level committees conducted the programmes as part of efforts to improve public awareness of tsunami threats and strengthen local preparedness.
The activities follow the objectives of the Tsunami Ready Programme, as recommended by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, in coordination with the Directorate of Disaster Management.
The programme focuses on helping coastal residents understand tsunami-related risks and improving the capacity of communities to respond effectively during emergencies.
The Directorate is implementing the initiative in collaboration with INCOIS and the district administrations of South Andaman, North and Middle Andaman, and Nicobar.
By conducting awareness activities through local administrative bodies and village committees, the programme seeks to strengthen disaster risk reduction at the grassroots level.
The Administration has identified 30 coastal villages for the initiative and is extending similar outreach activities to the remaining locations according to its implementation schedule.
The ongoing programme places emphasis on community awareness and preparedness as essential components of tsunami risk management, particularly for residents of coastal settlements.
Authorities aim to ensure that communities receive relevant information and develop the preparedness needed to respond promptly when tsunami threats arise.
