Swaraj Dweep, Oct. 12: A total of 1,102 Islander Identity Cards were updated during two-day camps on Swaraj Dweep, allowing residents to correct personal details, change addresses and update family records locally without travelling to the Tehsil Office.
The South Andaman District Administration organised the camps on October 10 and 11 at community halls in Govindnagar and Shyamnagar Gram Panchayats, following directions issued by Lieutenant Governor Dinesh Sharma during his visit to the island on October 9 and 10.
The camps processed requests from existing cardholders, including residents with cases pending for a long time. Officials facilitated corrections to card details, address changes, and verification and inclusion of family members’ names.
To reach residents unable to attend the venues, the administration also conducted house-to-house visits for elderly people, persons with disabilities and bedridden residents. The outreach enabled them to access the updation service without having to travel to the camps.
The District Collector of South Andaman visited the camps with Govindnagar Pradhan Ajit Kumar Roy and Shyamnagar Pradhan Alok Mridha to review arrangements and service delivery.
The two-day exercise addressed a practical access barrier for island residents by bringing identity-card services closer to their homes and reducing the need for travel to the Tehsil Office.
Members of the Panchayati Raj Institutions and local residents appreciated the initiative, saying it had made the updation process more convenient and accessible.
