Scientific Piggery Practices Take Centre Stage as 25 Livestock Farmers Visit Dollygunj Farm

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 29: Improving livestock-rearing practices and strengthening piggery as a livelihood option were the focus of an exposure visit organised for 25 livestock farmers at the Government Pig Training-cum-Demonstration Farm in Dollygunj. The programme sought to familiarise farmers with scientific methods of pig husbandry and practical approaches to managing piggery operations.

The Division of Animal Science, ICAR-CIARI, conducted the visit in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sippighat, as part of a training programme aimed at providing information and awareness on scientific pig rearing practices.

During the exposure visit, the Senior Veterinary Officer of the DTCDF, Dollygunj, explained key aspects of scientific pig rearing to the participating farmers. The session covered feeding, housing, breeding, deworming and routine management, giving the farmers practical information on different aspects of pig husbandry.

The programme also introduced the farmers to opportunities for increasing the value of pork through processed products. They were sensitised to pork value addition through products including ham, bacon and sausage. The training also highlighted piggery as a potential livelihood option for farmers.

The visit generated interest among the participating livestock farmers in adopting scientific methods of pig husbandry. Following the exposure programme, the farmers enrolled their names to obtain piglets from the Government Pig Training-cum-Demonstration Farm.

The exposure visit linked technical guidance with direct interaction at a demonstration farm, giving participating farmers an opportunity to understand recommended practices and explore piggery-related livelihood possibilities.
