Sri Vijaya Puram, July 23: A court has convicted a 30-year-old man from Mayabunder in a narcotics case registered earlier this year after he was found in possession of ganja during an anti-drug operation, marking the disposal of the case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The case relates to FIR No. 02/2026, registered on February 14, 2026, by the Anti-Narcotics Police Station under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The accused, Aslam Khan, son of Abdul Salam and a resident of Pokadera, Mayabunder, was apprehended during the operation and ganja was recovered from his conscious possession.
According to the case records, the contraband was seized and the accused was arrested after the completion of the prescribed legal formalities. The investigation was conducted by ASI S. Thimmi Raj of the Anti-Narcotics Police Station, following which a charge sheet was filed before the court.
The Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, South Andaman, convicted the accused on July 9, 2026, and disposed of the case in accordance with law.
The case adds to the list of prosecutions under the NDPS Act, which provides stringent penalties for offences involving narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Under the Act, the consumption, possession, transportation, sale and trafficking of prohibited narcotic substances constitute punishable offences. The nature of punishment depends on the quantity and type of contraband involved, with provisions for rigorous imprisonment of up to 20 years and fines of up to ₹2 lakh or more, as prescribed under the law.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and share information related to the possession, sale or trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. It said information can be reported through Dial 112, telephone number 234216, or mobile numbers 9434280055 and 9531856080, adding that the identity of informers will be kept confidential.
The authorities have urged public cooperation in reporting narcotics-related activities as part of efforts to curb the illegal drug trade and enforce the provisions of the NDPS Act across the islands.
