Sri Vijaya Puram, June 26: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration will launch an intensive island-wide traffic enforcement drive in the coming weeks to strengthen road safety, improve traffic discipline and ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules amid concerns over preventable road accidents.
The Transport Department announced that enforcement teams will conduct checks across the islands to verify compliance with traffic regulations and vehicle documentation. The initiative aims to promote safer road usage while ensuring motorists adhere to mandatory legal requirements.
As part of the enforcement campaign, vehicle owners have been advised to ensure that their driving licences and all vehicle-related documents remain valid and readily available during inspections. Officials stated that document verification will form a key component of the island-wide drive.
The department has also reiterated that wearing approved protective helmets is mandatory for both riders and pillion passengers travelling on two-wheelers. Similarly, all occupants of four-wheelers must wear seat belts in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules.
Authorities have further reminded motorists to strictly observe prescribed speed limits and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. The department said compliance with these safety measures remains essential for protecting both drivers and other road users.
Enforcement teams deployed at various checkpoints will carry out routine inspections and verification exercises during the drive. The Administration has urged transport operators, commercial vehicle drivers and private motorists to cooperate fully with officials during these inspections.
According to the Transport Department, the enforcement campaign forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve compliance with traffic laws and reduce the risk of road accidents across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Officials maintained that public safety remains the primary objective of the exercise.
The Administration has appealed to residents to exercise patience and extend courtesy to enforcement personnel while checks are underway. It stated that adherence to traffic regulations by every road user plays a vital role in preventing accidents and ensuring safer roads for the community.
The Transport Department reiterated that while enforcement agencies will continue to monitor compliance, the responsibility for safe driving ultimately rests with motorists and riders. It urged all road users to follow traffic regulations consistently to help reduce accidents and safeguard lives across the islands.
