Brutal Murder Shocks Havelock, Second Such Crime in Andamans in Weeks

Date:

Sri Vijay Puram, April 25: Swaraj Dweep (formerly Havelock Island) was jolted by a gruesome murder after the dismembered body of 35-year-old Kishore Hira was discovered in a jungle, marking the second high-profile killing in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands within weeks.

Hira, a resident of Krishna Nagar, was last seen on the night of April 21. When he failed to return home, his family and locals launched a search before alerting police. Investigators later found his severed remains hidden under thick foliage in a remote part of the forest.

Authorities swiftly mobilized, examining CCTV footage and questioning suspects before arresting a man believed to be connected to the crime. Preliminary investigations suggest the murder may be linked to an extramarital affair involving the victim’s wife.

This incident follows the recent killing of Diglipur-based journalist Sahadev Dey, allegedly orchestrated by a local contractor. The back-to-back murders have drawn attention to law and order in the archipelago, though police maintain the islands remain safe.

“Investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to ensuring justice,” said a senior police official. Additional patrols have been deployed in sensitive areas as authorities work to reassure the public.

Swaraj Dweep, a popular tourist destination known for its beaches and diving spots, has not reported any official travel advisories following the incident. Tourism officials confirmed that business continues as usual, with no cancellations reported so far.
