Balendra Shah Sworn in as Nepal Prime Minister after Landslide Election Victory

Date:

Balendra Shah assumed office as Nepal’s Prime Minister on March 27, becoming the youngest elected leader to hold the position after his party secured a decisive mandate in the recent parliamentary elections.

President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed Shah under Article 76(1) of the Constitution, following his election as parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party. The development marks Shah as the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal and reflects a significant political shift driven by a younger leadership base.

The swearing-in ceremony was scheduled at the President’s Office and accompanied by traditional Hindu rituals. As part of the proceedings, conch shells were to be blown, while Vedic priests and Buddhist monks performed customary chants, reflecting Nepal’s cultural and religious practices.

Shah’s elevation follows a sweeping electoral victory by the Rastriya Swatantra Party, which secured 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives. The party had projected Shah as its prime ministerial candidate during the campaign, a move widely seen as instrumental in consolidating support, particularly among younger voters.

The 35-year-old leader defeated former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli by a margin of 49,614 votes in Jhapa-5. Shah secured 68,348 votes against Oli’s 18,734, marking the highest vote tally recorded by any candidate in Nepal’s parliamentary elections since 1991.

Shah entered national politics less than two years ago, following his victory as an independent candidate in the Kathmandu mayoral election in 2022. His rapid rise has been linked to his appeal among urban voters and younger demographics, as well as his focus on governance and infrastructure issues during his tenure as mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Born on April 27, 1990, in Kathmandu, Shah comes from a Madhesi family with a background rooted in education and cultural values. He completed his undergraduate studies in Kathmandu before pursuing a master’s degree in Structural Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University. His academic training contributed to his approach to urban planning and public works while in municipal office.

The composition of the newly elected parliament, with a significant number of younger lawmakers, signals a broader generational transition in Nepal’s political landscape. Shah’s leadership is expected to reflect this shift, with emphasis on governance reforms and administrative efficiency.

His appointment follows the formal endorsement by his party on March 26, paving the way for the constitutional process to take effect. The transition marks a notable change in Nepal’s political leadership, with the Rastriya Swatantra Party emerging as a dominant force in national politics.

The formation of the new government is expected to set the direction for Nepal’s policy priorities in the coming term, as the country navigates domestic governance challenges and broader regional dynamics.
