The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has temporarily stopped distributing its newly released Class 8 Social Science textbook after inappropriate textual material and an editorial error were detected in a chapter on the judiciary. The decision follows directions from the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education.
The textbook, titled Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Volume II, was released on February 24, 2026, after undergoing standard approval procedures applicable to NCERT publications. Soon after copies were circulated, concerns were raised regarding specific portions in Chapter 4, “The Role of Judiciary in our Society,” covering pages 125 to 142.
Taking note of the issue, the Department of School Education and Literacy instructed that distribution be placed on immediate hold until a review is completed and corrective measures are implemented. NCERT confirmed that it has complied fully with the directive and halted further circulation of the book pending revision of the concerned content.
In an official statement, NCERT expressed regret over what it described as the unintentional inclusion of inappropriate material. The Council acknowledged a lapse in editorial judgement and apologised for the error.
NCERT stated that it holds the judiciary in the highest regard as a central pillar of India’s democratic structure, tasked with upholding the Constitution and safeguarding Fundamental Rights. It clarified that the inclusion of the material was accidental and that there was no intention to question or diminish the authority, dignity or constitutional role of the judiciary or any other institution.
The Council emphasised that the objective of introducing new textbooks is to enhance constitutional literacy among students, strengthen civic awareness and encourage respect for democratic institutions and governance frameworks. It reiterated that it remains open to constructive feedback from educators, academic experts and stakeholders as part of its established quality review processes.
To address the matter, NCERT said the chapter in question will undergo detailed scrutiny and rewriting in consultation with subject experts, academic authorities and relevant institutional stakeholders. The revision process aims to ensure accuracy, clarity and full alignment with constitutional principles.
The Council confirmed that the corrected version of the textbook will be made available before the start of the 2026–27 academic session. Distribution will remain suspended until the revision is completed and the updated edition receives formal approval for circulation.
The development has prompted discussions on editorial oversight and quality control mechanisms in textbook preparation. NCERT stated that it will introduce additional safeguards and strengthen review protocols to minimise the possibility of similar oversights in future publications.
The suspension comes amid broader efforts to ensure that educational materials accurately reflect constitutional values and uphold the dignity of key institutions. NCERT reiterated its commitment to maintaining academic integrity and the highest standards in content development.
Until the review concludes and the revised edition is cleared, the distribution of the Class 8 Social Science textbook will remain on hold nationwide.
