Sri Vijaya Puram: In a move to combat drug abuse and address the growing mental health crisis, the Government of India has rolled out two dedicated 24×7 helplines under the MANAS (Madak Padarth Nishedh Asuchna Kendra) initiative across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The dual-purpose platform enables citizens to seek mental health assistance or report narcotics-related incidents with complete confidentiality and ease.
The helplines – 14416 or 1-800-891-4416 for mental health support, and 1933 for reporting drug abuse and trafficking, are part of a nationwide push by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), New Delhi. These services are available through the MANAS portal, a web-based application designed to act as a bridge between the general public and law enforcement agencies. The platform can be accessed at https://ncbmanas.gov.in.
The MANAS initiative recognizes the interconnectedness of mental health and substance abuse and aims to tackle both issues simultaneously. Officials say the need for an integrated response has grown more urgent in remote regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where access to psychological care and de-addiction services can be limited. The helplines are designed to be citizen-friendly, offering 24×7 access to trained professionals who can provide guidance, counselling, and next steps for both individuals and families in crisis. For those struggling with addiction or witnessing drug-related activity in their communities, the platform provides a simple yet powerful way to alert the authorities anonymously.
According to the Narcotics Control Bureau, the MANAS portal not only streamlines public participation in the anti-drug movement but also enhances transparency in law enforcement efforts. Reports made through the platform are directly routed to relevant authorities for prompt action, ensuring a swift and accountable system.”MANAS empowers citizens to play an active role in creating a drug-free society,” said an NCB official. “Whether someone needs help with a mental health issue or wants to report illicit narcotics activity, these helplines ensure that no one is left unheard. “The Andaman and Nicobar Police have welcomed the initiative and urged island residents to make responsible use of the helplines. In a public statement, the department emphasized that community participation is crucial to building a safer and healthier region. “We appeal to all citizens to utilize these services judiciously, whether you are seeking mental health support or want to report suspicious drug-related activities in your area,” a police spokesperson said. “Together, we can safeguard our youth and foster a secure environment for all.”
As cases of substance abuse and mental health disorders continue to rise across the country, the MANAS helplines represent a critical lifeline for many. By integrating technology with compassionate care and legal oversight, the government hopes to create a national framework of support that reaches even the most geographically isolated regions. With mental wellness and drug control now just a phone call away, authorities are optimistic that more citizens across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will come forward, not just for themselves, but for the larger good of their communities.
